Integrity
This is a vital value that underpins Risteard’s legal practice. It means being honest with the client and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the case as early as possible.
Risteard de Paor is an independent international disputes lawyer dual-qualified in common and civil law. He has over a decade of experience in arbitration, ADR (including mediation and dispute boards), and litigation across diverse sectors, from construction and energy to environment, manufacturing, transport and technology.
Clients appreciate his solution-oriented and hands-on approach. If a dispute can be resolved early and favourably, he says so and works tirelessly to that end. If a full-scale arbitration is appropriate, he is detail-oriented yet pragmatic and prepares the case as if it were his own. He has significant advocacy experience and has successfully appeared as sole counsel in international arbitrations on a number of occasions, as well as in English High Court proceedings.
He acts as sole counsel for corporate clients and, for bigger cases, works as co-counsel alongside law firms or can quickly put together a top-level, tailored team with other lawyers in his network. He has considerable experience in obtaining third party funding for claims. He also accepts appointments as arbitrator.
Risteard has worked in some of the world’s highest-ranked arbitration practices, including White & Case, Dentons and Herbert Smith Freehills. He is fluent in English, French and Spanish and has represented clients in proceedings in each of these languages. He has acted in commercial and investor-State arbitrations under ICC, ICSID, LCIA, Swiss Arbitration Centre, and UNCITRAL rules.
He is a solicitor advocate of England & Wales, an “avocat à la cour” at the Paris bar and Irish solicitor (both non-practising), and a registered foreign lawyer at the Madrid bar. While a large part of his practice centres on English law, he has represented clients in disputes subject to the law of more than 10 other jurisdictions.
Risteard lectures on international arbitration in third level institutions in Madrid, a city he loves.
This is a vital value that underpins Risteard’s legal practice. It means being honest with the client and discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the case as early as possible.
To paraphrase Atticus Finch, climbing into the client’s skin and walking around in it, is central to his approach. Prioritizing the client’s interests, while not losing the necessary external counsel viewpoint, is essential.
It means being efficient, commercial and, when appropriate, bold and creative.
